Painter Mariam Megalla recently moved into a studio at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. To cover the rent, she took a second job—but now can only get to the studio two or three days a week.

"I had just recently gotten my new studio, and to help comfortably support the rent for it, I needed outside sources of income," Megalla told Urgent Matter.

Urgent Matter releases fourth digital ‘print’ edition
Vol. 1, No. 4, free for paid subscribers: four artist profiles, British Museum lobbying letters, obituaries, fairs, jobs and a crossword.

Megalla teaches fine arts courses at St. Joseph's University, according to her website. She also takes commissions “every now and then,” she said.

But after taking on freelance work for a painted monogram company to help cover the studio rent, she found herself with less time to paint. Before that, she was at the studio four to five times a week.

"My dream is to just have endless studio days," she said.
