Valeria Deminova is assembling her first home studio, an extra room in a new apartment, after more than a year without a dedicated space to paint.

“Rebuilding the space is, I would say, part of my art practice right now: just creating the new art studio space for myself,” Deminova said in response to Urgent Matter’s print edition artist questionnaire.

The move follows a period she describes as an involuntary pause. Deminova finished her MFA in May 2025 without a studio, residency, or money to rent space on her own, she said.

She focused on making money to fund her practice. She spent the past two years working part-time as an artist assistant and teaching tennis, occasionally applying for grants, and saving toward housing that could include a studio.
