Instagram paid for an entire art installation by Los Angeles artist Vita Kari during Pride month this year. Kari said the project arrived as a grant with no branding or promotion attached.

Kari said the platform funded the installation outright.

“They funded the entire thing. There was no promotion or branding on their side. They just wanted to fund an installation of mine,” Kari said.

The installation, titled This Is Not A Billboard, was funded through Instagram’s Drafts program. The money let Kari hire friends to help build it, they said, describing the arrangement as an art grant.

“They gave me this art grant, and it was so generous and honestly really life-changing for me,” Kari said.

Kari works in video, performance, textile and paper, and said the practice is built around interrupting social media algorithms — what they called “glitching the algorithm.”
