This page hosts records released under the Texas Public Information Act concerning the University of Texas at Austin’s internal handling of a student-organized exhibition publicly titled “Contemporary Art Under Fascism.”
The records were released in response to a follow-up request after Urgent Matter reported that UT Austin officials had scrutinized the exhibition over university policy compliance, outside participation and whether the show could “strike a chord with the wrong party.”
The newly released records include an April 14-15 email exchange between Susan W. Rather, chair of the Department of Art and Art History, and Hannah J. Spector, the exhibition’s faculty sponsor, days before the show opened.
The records also include an internal text message stating that central legal review did not result in cancellation of the exhibition but did result in adjustments.
