This page hosts court records from Suryast U.S. Enterprises v. Perlmutter, a federal lawsuit challenging the U.S. Copyright Office’s refusal to register Suryast, an A.I.-assisted artwork created by intellectual property lawyer Ankit Sahni.

The complaint was filed May 8 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. It asks a federal judge to set aside the Copyright Office’s refusal and order the agency to register the work with Sahni as the author.

The case follows a series of Copyright Office decisions drawing a line between human authorship and works or portions of works the office attributes to A.I. systems.
