The White House said the two presidential portraits were “created from over 6,000 puzzle pieces” and offer families “the chance to be challenged, have fun, and use their imagination together.” Despite that description, the images show that the works were constructed from Lego bricks. Both portraits sit on matching pedestal stands draped in dark green fabric, placed directly in front of tall windows. Above each portrait hangs a lit holiday wreath with a red bow, also made of Legos. The two are arranged as a mirrored pair flanking the central furniture piece, a tall wooden cabinet. But their presence in the Green Room is striking. As the only Lego portraits on display, the two presidents are presented as a deliberate pairing, an effect that implicitly places Trump on equal visual footing with Washington. The choice stands in contrast to the room’s surrounding works, formally collected and historically significant paintings, making the Lego portraits read as an unexpected counterpoint within one of the White House’s most traditional spaces. A.
