Instead, archaeologists found an Ancient Roman burial ground.
The Syrian government has responded to claims circulating on social media that archaeologists had discovered a “cave of gold,” dismissing them as inaccurate.
Syrian officials said Sunday there was “serious interest” among the population of an alleged discovery of a cavern filled with gold in the area of Al-Hara countryside of Daraa.
The officials sought to dispel the rumors “to ensure the safety of cultural heritage and preservation of archaeological properties” and clarified that, while archaeologists have made a discovery, they uncovered an Ancient Roman burial ground after excavating the foundations of a building.
