Massive Cloudflare outage affects museum websites

A massive Cloudflare outage was affecting large swaths of the internet, including museum websites, Tuesday morning.

Websites visited by Urgent Matter and affected by the outage included the Art Institute of Chicago, which has since regained functionality.

The British Museum and Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery were still facing outages at the time of publication. It was not immediately clear how many museums were affected.

"Cloudflare is experiencing an internal service degradation," the company said in a statement around 6:48 a.m. EST. "Some services may be intermittently impacted. We are focused on restoring service."

The outages also affected websites including the social media company X, Spotify, Amazon and OpenAI, according to the online tracker DownDetector.
